Test drive Audi E-tron GT

In early 2021, Audi introduced a new electric model called the E-tron GT, which has a four-door coupe body and a common base with the Porsche Taycan. Today it is the latest novelty from the Audi brand, so it carries all the modern technologies and options. However, to consider this car as a vehicle of the future does not make sense, because the active development of electric motors and batteries has just begun. Today we will try the new E-tron GT for the first time in real life and see how ready drivers are for the features of electric cars.

Technological Audi E-tron GT is an iconic model for the German brand with which the automaker will try to compete not only with Porsche Taycan but also Tesla Model S. If you analyze the value of competitors in the European market it turns out that the most expensive among the three electric cars was Taycan with a price of 105 thousand euros, a little cheaper is the E-tron GT with a price of 95 thousand euros, and closes the list of Model S for which they ask 85 thousand euros. So far, electric car prices have remained high due to low production volumes and expensive batteries, but in a few years experts predict a 20-30% drop in prices, which will make electric cars more competitive with cars that need gasoline or diesel. The technology used in the Tesla Model S can not be called too outdated, but Audi and Porsche have more experience in creating cars, so the latest innovations from German manufacturers largely outperform the American product.

In fairness, the Tesla Model S continues to lead in acceleration to 100 km / h and a range of more than 500 km, but the performance of German premium sedans is not much worse and the lag is measured in fractions of a second and several tens of kilometers. It is in these indicators that the American has set a high bar, which even now is a benchmark for other manufacturers of electric cars. The impetus received from Tesla Model S prompted other manufacturers to develop their own electric cars, because by 2030 in Europe it is planned to complete the production of gasoline and diesel cars. Even in the event of a delay in the transition to electric vehicles, the latest models with classic power plants will be hybrids that have already learned to use 2-3 liters of fuel for every 100 km. So let's go back to our test drive, on which we found the new Audi E-tron GT. The test model is equipped with a 93 kW / h battery and a pair of electric motors, which develop a total of 470 hp. and 630 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes only 4.5 seconds. And the maximum speed is about 225 km / h.

The most impressive achievement of the Audi E-tron GT is the high-speed charging with a power of 270 kW, which allows you to recharge the battery from 20 to 80% in just 23 minutes, which gives hope for quickly overcoming the obstacle in delaying owners of electric vehicles at specialized gas stations. Currently in the European Union there is a boom in the placement of fast charging stations and the promotion of additional services for electric vehicles. On the road, the beginner feels very confident and this is the main feature of cars with a low center of gravity and a powerful electric motor. The cabin is quite quiet, but the driver hears the synthetic sound of the "exhaust system", which is provided so that other drivers and pedestrians can notice the approach of the car in time.

In the cabin, the E-tron GT gives positive emotions by preserving the brand architecture of the front panel and the ergonomics of ordinary Audi cars. Torpedo touch panels and a virtual cockpit of digital devices emphasize the current trends followed by the German automaker. Even the interior of the Porsche Taycan does not look like a reference to the E-tron GT.

Audi technology features include a driver assistance package, panoramic roof, infotainment system, LED headlights, no key access and many electrical options. The test also revealed many nuances in the settings of the suspension and other systems in the car. The driver can easily switch between modes, which allows you to adjust driving efficiency and comfort. Such trifles distinguish German cars from American ones, although the latter also have something to surprise. In the Tesla Model S, the management of functions and options is concentrated in the infotainment complex, but it is more difficult to change the settings and the result does not always meet expectations. Among the advantages of the Germans are also better controllability, quality of decoration and less loss of value in the secondary market.

The results of the test drive were quite unexpected, as both German electric cars took first place, and the American electric car lagged behind by as much as nine points. The advantage of the Tesla Model S was felt only in cost and dynamics, which are not key parameters among competitors…
