The test drive of the new BMW 1-Series

Back in 2003, BMW risked its own reputation and launched into the series a new compact model, which, however, had everything that fans around the world love and respect for Bavarian cars. It has been 16 years since BMW decided to take the risk again, but this time it was so brazen that customers began to criticize the brand quite hard. First and foremost - we will no longer see the rear-wheel drive 1-Series, and it is sad, because those emotions that gave the compact predecessor will remain in the past.

Today we will find out how the BMW 1-Series has changed and what the Bavarians will offer their fans in the next generation of units. The new hatchback was launched just recently, and we've already got the 1-Series tested and are going to share our impressions of this sporty compact car. First, the single looks like all front-wheel drive hatchbacks, but that doesn't mean the hatchback doesn't have its own style. On the contrary, we have a real BMW with all the known know-how. The bright appearance is accentuated by the swollen nostrils of the radiator grille and short overhangs.

For the test we got the BMW 118d, which is the optimal choice in terms of pleasant dynamics and favorable price. The front-wheel drive hatchback on the road turned out to be quite pleasant and manageable, behaved in turns and almost did not give out any type of drive. In Europe, prices for the 118d diesel version of the M Sport package start at around € 30,000. This model is equipped with a modernized 4-cylinder diesel engine of 2 liters. The power plant produces 150 hp and 350Nm of torque, which is pretty good for a dynamic drive.

The acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h occurs in 8.5 seconds and the top speed is 220 km / h. The average fuel consumption during the test was 7.5 liters, but it should be borne in mind that the car was tested in rather difficult conditions. In addition to the automatic gearbox, which was installed on our hatchback in the base can be 6-speed mechanics. The car lost 15 kg and it was very positive not only on the dynamics, but also on the environmental friendliness of the unit. The newcomer meets the environmental standards of Euro 6 and emits only 108 g of heavy substance per kilometer.

On the road, the 118d feels like we're driving in a class car, perhaps because the newcomer looks like the older 3-Series. Improving the chassis design and incorporating state-of-the-art technology into other units have increased the hatchback's comfort and ride characteristics.

In addition to the new exterior, the BMW 1-Series has a high-quality and modern interior. The architecture of the dashboard and center console repeats the 3-Series, which is not surprising, since Bavarians like to use their own unique design. In the middle of the hatchback, due to the new base increased space in the rear seats. The excellent front seats provide excellent lateral support and a wide range of adjustments. As an accessory on the test car, a BMW Live Cockpit Plus system with an 8.8-inch screen and a touch washer from the iDrive controller was installed. This package also includes voice control and Apple CarPlay.

So, the newcomer was quite spacious both from the front and from the back. A nice surprise was the luggage compartment, which can hold about 350 liters of usable volume.
